This blog is for international students to learn how to get a driver's license in the States.
Many of us international students come from big cities. We might be used to having convenient public transportation systems, and not needing to drive too much to get around. However, it is a little bit different here. We have a really good public transportation system here, but I have found it more convenient to drive, especially if you want to go on a road trip out of Rochester (there are really cool places surrounding the area, like Letchworth state park, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Finger Lakes, etc.). Therefore, some of you might want to get your own car.
The first step is to get a learner permit. You can apply for the learner permit at the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You will get your learner permit once you pass the learner permit test, which is a short test you will be taking when you go to DMV. The test is just to make sure you know the basic traffic rules. Once you pass the test, you will be able to get your learner permit right away. At most DMVs, you can take the test in different languages. You will be able to buy a car once you have a learner permit.
The second step: learn how to drive a car! (People who know how to drive can ignore this step.) You can find a certified driving school or instructor in the area. Learning with a friend is not recommended. Their car insurance will not cover you if any accidents happen, and it is safer to learn from a professional. If you have your own car, then keep in mind that you need someone over the age of 21 to be in the car with you as you drive while you have your learner permit.
The third step, schedule your road test! This is also the final step for you to get your driver's license. You will be able to schedule a road test at your local DMV. Arrive at the appointment time; then the tester will sit in your car and give you instructions on what to do. Don't be too nervous, just follow the instructions. After you pass, you will get your driver's license!
Now you can go on a road trip and explore all of Rochester and the surrounding areas!
