I’m graduating in a couple of weeks, and I have to say, I’m really going to miss my friends. I’ve made a lot of memories with these guys, and lately I’ve been reflecting on a lot of those. With that in mind, here’s a list of some of the types of friends you’ll make at RIT!
The Matrix:
This kid will know everything about the Internet. Through him you will learn about darknet, you will sperlunk the depths of reddit, you will see horrible things, and you will never be the same. This kid is a walking, talking meme, always ready to hit you with the latest social media fad, but always ready to show you something he found online that you’ll wish he hadn’t.
The Rival:
This guy is either in your major or in your club. He’s a great friend, but you also compete in everything you do. If you got an A-, he gets an A+. If you score 20 points, he scores 21. He’s the nicest kid in the world, but bring a referee when you hang out because there’s a big chance that things will get intense.
The Beatle:
Yeah he likes music, but he wouldn’t be caught dead listening to the Beatles. This man is the ultimate hipster. He grinds his own coffee. He listens to foreign music he can’t understand. He will judge you for listening to Taylor Swift. But he’s also a great guy and will show you some great artists you’ve never heard before, thus expanding your iTunes collection by 500 songs. Rock on.
The Rain on the Parade:
Did you take a nice picture? Did you post a video you made on Facebook to share with the world? That’s a bad idea, because this guy is waiting to keep your ego in check. It seems he always knows just how to critique your work. It’s not quite mean, but it just feels uninvited. The worst part? All of his critique is right. The good news is that he means well, and he’s just messing around. He thinks your work is pretty good. Could be better though.
The NICEST PERSON EVER:
This will happen to EVERYONE. You will meet someone that is just the absolute NICEST person in the world. They’re always smiling, they’re always positive, and they’re always super supportive. Most of the time they’re extremely talented at what they do, which makes their niceness all the more amazing. In a world filled with research projects, all-nighters, and the darkness of winter, this unicorn of a person is a shimmering gleam of hope and light.
I’m not saying all of you will have the exact same experience I had. In fact, I’d hope that you guys have equally unique and memorable years here. But look out for these people as you go through RIT, and keep the friends you do make close. You might not realize it all the time, but these will be your friends for life.
