Being an IE Student at RIT!

IE refers to Industrial and Systems Engineering. If you are an IE student and you are reading this blog, do you have the same confusion as I do? When I tell a friend that my major is IE, the friend immediately says, “Oh! You are an ID (Industrial Design) student.” No, I am an engineering student!

For those of you who don’t know what IE is, industrial engineering is about how to choose the better options and studying the way to improve an existing method. As IE students, we have the opportunity to work in many different fields of the business. Before I came to RIT I knew this was what I like to do, and now in my fifth year here I can say I am glad I chose RIT's IE department to spend my college life. The IE department at RIT has a great community of faculty, students, and staff. IE is a small department compared to some of the other engineering departments, so we usually have small class sizes. Students get familiar with and close to each other, and also get close to professors. To practice what we learned in class, the IE department offers us many hands-on labs and research opportunities. We have one Toyota Lab and two awesome computer labs.

RIT also focuses on career preparation for students. Until now I have two co-ops already. Working during college gives me more understanding of the knowledge I learned in class. Oh, and I must tell you that we have many fun events as well! We have coffee and popcorn time when exams come. We have donuts and cider for holidays. We have dress-up for Halloween. We have a “baseball game” gathering with faculty, students and stuff to have fun at the end of each year.

So much fun, so much knowledge, so much experience and so many friends here I have gotten in RIT's IE department. Check out the ISE website if you want to know more! https://www.rit.edu/kgcoe/ise/
