Labor Day Weekend: Niagara Falls and Darien Lake

One of the best parts about being a college student is you can go on a completely impromptu road trip and still have a lot of fun, or I guess that was the reason why it was a lot of fun in the first place. Over Labor Day weekend, I visited Niagara Falls and Darien Lake amusement park with my study abroad friends from Dubai. They were surprised at the ease and convenience of taking a short road trip even without owning a car, just like I was few years ago when I was new to the U.S. The trip was planned or rather talked about only few hours before we got on the road. One of my friends suggested that it was a nice day outside and we should be doing something “exciting” and that’s when Darien Lake popped in my head. Until that moment we haven’t even thought about Niagara Falls. So I called a rental car company to check if I'm eligible to rent a car for a day. Initially they were not able to help me because I needed a lot of documents since I am under 25 and would be paying with debit instead of credit, but as soon I told them the four magical words “I am a student," everything seemed to work out very well. Being a student has its own perks and being an RIT student has even more. For example, when I told them I go to RIT all they asked for was class schedule and of course my driving license and voila! I was able to rent a car and off to Darien Lake we went.

As the day got nicer our trip got better, and the temperature reached a point where we had to ditch the roller coasters and go to the waterpark within Darien Lake. Just as we were about to leave the park, I looked up the distance from Darien Lake to Niagara Falls out of curiosity. It was barely an hour, so I threw the idea out there and the next thing we know, we were on our way to Niagara Falls! We reached it during sunset and so we got to capture nice photos because of the transition. Overall the trip was fantastic and on our way home we stopped at an Indian restaurant for dinner. Usually unplanned trips have their own complications and consequences but for some reason everything worked out according to plan...even though there really wasn’t one!
