During the summer right before my senior year, I went to RIT for College and Careers. For those of you who have not heard about College and Careers, it is a two-day “career conference” offered once in July and once in August. College and Careers is design to help rising seniors in high school learn more about different majors and career options.
College and Careers helped me narrow down my major to either Civil Engineering or Graphic Design. After a lot of consideration and thought, I eventually decided to try Civil Engineering.
I went on a lot of college visits with my twin brother. At each school, I was looking for a mix of engineering and art. Even though I had decided to go with engineering, I was not ready to give up art completely.
I was disappointed to find that many of the engineering schools I visited had little to no art… at all. RIT was the first school I visited to actually have a strong design program and a strong engineering program. I knew that I could at least take some elective classes or join a club or something that involved art.
I entered RIT in the fall of 2013 as a Civil Engineering Technology major. I was so excited to finally be on campus. I joined a lot of clubs, included Design Build (which is a civil engineering club).
In the spring, however, I decided that engineering wasn’t quite the right fit for me. I heard from a friend about this amazing major called New Media Design. It had the perfect amount of technology and design. I knew from the moment I heard about it that this was the perfect fit for me. I talked to my advisor and began the process of switching my major.
I have now completed a full semester in my new major, New Media Design, and could not be happier. I am so excited for all my classes and I’ll the opportunities waiting for me. J
