So as an ambassador who originates from the great (and warm) state of Texas, I typically get the question “So what is the weather REALLY like?”. Well here I am today to give you an honest answer. It would seem all most people really care about is the winter—so I’ll focus on that first.
It’s cold.
But if you wear the correct clothes you’ll be just fine.
Honestly that’s usually what I tell people. When decided to come to RIT for school everyone I know bought me winter clothes. Hats, scarves, gloves, sweatshirts, under layers, coats, you name it. I’m set. I will check the weather every morning before I leave the house and try to wear layers accordingly. If you bundle up you can definitely survive whatever Rochester throws at you.
An important question to ask yourself for any season besides winter: Is there rain in the forecast? I just started bringing an umbrella with me everywhere I go. The weather is bipolar, so just be prepared for anything! I also recommend getting a nice windbreaker—that will protect you from the lake effect winds.
Overall I would say that while the weather isn’t ideal, it’s definitely bearable. You’ll be fine. Don’t let the weather be a deciding factor on a school—you need to choose a school where you will be academically successful. Sometimes the weather is just part of the ticket. If I can survive a Rochester winter, so can you.
